We are all aware of the advantages of cloud computing: Flexibility, Elasticity, Cost reduction, Quick time to market to name just a few…

We tend to think that our business is the only one that is still not fully operating on the cloud, while everyone around us is already there.  According to most research companies, this is far from being true; when it comes to databases, many of us are still operating on premise, and there are many reasons why.

…cloud database is in the very early stages of adoption, with most data-related workloads deployed on-premises.

Why Not Moving to the Cloud

Companies may be reluctant to migrate to the cloud because of different reasons:

  • The cloud does not ensure the required security level, and compliance problems might arise
  • Costs, performance and latency are unknown
  • Migration might be risky and may require modification to comply to the cloud architecture
  • Poor network infrastructure might cause companies to prefer not to rely on the cloud

Should concerns regarding cost variance, performance, and security become great enough, enterprises may choose to repatriate applications back into their in-house infrastructure.

Taking the risk into account while considering the cloud advantages, and the urge to be in front of technology, we are now facing a problem….

IDC – The Power of Hybrid Cloud, May 2017

What is Hybrid Cloud

Hybrid cloud combines the cloud computing with the on premise environment. This means that part of the information resides on the cloud and the rest is on site, on the business’s resources. The decision which data to store where is based on the business needs and nature, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of the cloud vs. on premise.

Why Hybrid Cloud

Hybrid solution can work for many different businesses and for different needs. Here are some of them:

  • Gradual migration to the cloud

Many companies want to migrate to the cloud but want to mitigate the risk while assessing the value of the migration as they go. This scenario leads to the decision to apply a partial migration. They can operate this way for a while, and once they are ready to continue the migration they can keep going with the process.

  • Data segregation

Companies are very concern about their data and want to assure it is safe. For that matter, keeping the sensitive data on premise and the rest of the data on the cloud is a perfect solution. This configuration can serve companies as a permanent solution.

  • IoT

Connecting “things” to the internet can be done on premise. But processing big amounts of data generated from these “things” for other purposes such as BI, machine learning or AI requires lots of storage that can grow on the go. Anticipating the amount of data that will be accumulated is almost impossible. The cloud is a great solution for that. Furthermore, companies can also use cloud tools to analyse, manipulate and process this kind of data.

  • More use cases…

Hybrid cloud is a current trend, and we learn about new use cases every day. Hybrid cloud can solve different needs for different companies.

When Hybrid Cloud

Now, and long to the future. Hybrid solution can be temporary or a permanent solution. As it is used for different reasons. Each case has its own time span.

Hybrid cloud will be around for at least the next 10, 20, 30 years. Not everyone can move everything they have on premise to the public cloud overnight.

How Hybrid Cloud

At PartitionDB we identified the need to keep a database distributed on premise, on the cloud or hybrid. We provide a simple solution to partition a database and manage it, while the partitions can reside anywhere you wish. The solution is a natural hybrid cloud solution, while providing more advantages to the business.

In the next articles I will talk about common use cases for Hybrid cloud, and explain how PartitionDB is the perfect solution for these cases. You can read it here.
